On April 21st 2015 Google updated their algorithm and the change has been branded as ‘Mobilegeddon’. Essentially, the update caused an uproar and a huge amount of backlash in regards to businesses and websites that were ranking well before the update but suddenly fell in the rankings because their site was not mobile friendly.
Before April 21st Google warned website owners that the act of having a mobile site would help rankings significantly in the future. Developing a site for tablets and smartphones opens up the concept of having a site that can be used by anyone on any device. Unfortunately, many businesses were unable to have their website mobile responsive by this date and they were negatively affected very quickly which resulted in them loosing business very quickly.
MOBILE WEBSITES
Many organisations contacted their customers to make them aware of the changes to Googles algorithm just before April 21st and this allowed them to generate a huge amount of business and it ultimately benefited the organisations that bought into the concept of having a mobile site.
While the effect of Mobilegeddon was not instantaneous, many studies confirmed that non-mobile friendly sites were severely punshished, some sites lost as much as 10% of their traffic compared to rankings a year before which is significant if we look at the amount of money that these organisations were generating.
